A brief introduction to Sloe House
The introductions
Greetings. I’m Peter, a fiction writer originally from England, now living in Dublin.
This is the story of what happens when a property developer takes over an obscure private members’ club, Sloe House, with its membership, finances and identity in freefall. From an old school house deep in the country, the club selects for maverick members whose work is too emergent, experimental or personal to find a place in the world just yet.
When our narrator, Carlton, is given the job of re-inventing the “status-neutral” club as a high profile commercial property venture, he has a fight on his hands - not least with its increasingly radical figurehead, Clem. It’s a story for anyone who’s ever, or never, been personally invited to join an exclusive organisation.
What are you thinking?
I’d hope Sloe House will spark discussion among us about some of the big themes in the culture just now: identity, status, and social class, how we value human worth and achievement, the meaning crisis, access to the transcendent, plus whatever else you might bring to the table. In any case, I want you to experience a compelling, meaningful story.
I’ll aim to post a new chapter every couple or weeks or so, and I’d be delighted to hear what Sloe House is doing for you.
